Russell McVeagh's Summer Clerk Programme is undoubtedly first class - every step of the recruitment process is professional and welcoming. Interviews are followed by excellent functions where you will get to meet friendly and outgoing people from all levels of the firm and find out what the firm and people are really like.
As a summer clerk you will be involved in real work for some of New Zealand's largest companies. I was based in the Auckland Corporate Advisory Group, in Graeme Quigley's office. Sitting in a partner's office gave me an invaluable insight into the corporate lawyer's role and an interesting practical perspective to complement my university study.
Some of the things you may do in your time here include research, opinion writing, attending client meetings, giving presentations and analysing documents and contracts.
You will learn about how Russell McVeagh's systems work, from the legal databases to formatting styles, as well as gaining an idea about the relationship and interaction the firm has with its clients.
While clerking may seem a daunting step from university study, Russell McVeagh provides an array of support services. Comprehensive training, library and research services, health services and guidance are just some of the ways in which you are eased into the clerking programme.
Equally important is the emphasis placed on social activities. Russell McVeagh fosters a positive and fun atmosphere within the firm, particularly so at events like the Christmas Party, team get togethers, Taupo induction trip and the Annual Ball.

“There are plenty of opportunities over the summer to really enjoy yourself. We had a great group of summer clerks who all got along really well and we socialised together outside of work regularly.”
