What struck me first about working at Russell McVeagh was the sheer breadth of its client base; ranging from large companies like Lion Nathan, to private individuals. Few other law firms present the opportunity to dive deep into the legal affairs of New Zealand's largest corporates, but at the same time work on a variety of legal issues, often collaborating with other practice groups.
Before clerking at the firm, I had the idea that Russell McVeagh dealt with big corporate clients on big commercial issues - but the reality has been far more varied. Alongside a number of stimulating commercial disputes, I've worked on public law in Fiji for an international hotel chain, and criminal law for a large logging interest in Northland.
Answers are not only to be found in Russell McVeagh's very impressive law library. The firm takes each matter in context - often advising on practical issues beyond the legal sphere, covering anything from business strategy to public relations. Advice is always grounded in common sense.
At a leading law firm, in New Zealand's business capital, it's hard not to pick up insight into New Zealand business. Clerking over the summer has given me a window into some major transactions, and Commerce Commission litigation - which often find their way into the business pages.

LITIGATION & COMPETITION
“In litigation we had the opportunity to undertake research work and I was also fortunate to be in the unique position of getting to spend a few days working on a mediation. This included the preparatory work and a full 14 hour mediation session. While a little intimidating, the experience was both exciting and revealing. Seeing how the Partner and client dealt with what was at times a seriously acrimonious day was absolutely invaluable.”
